Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure intended to remove fat deposits and shape the body. Fat is removed from under the skin with the use of a vacuum-suction canula (a hollow pen-like instrument) or using an ultrasonic probe that emulsifies (breaks up into small pieces) the fat and then removes it with suction.

Persons with localized fat may decide to have liposuction to remove fat from that area. Liposuction is a procedure for shaping the body and is not recommended for weight loss.

Liposuction may be performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, calves, arms, buttocks, back, neck, or face. A liposuction procedure may include more than one site, for instance, the abdomen, back, and thighs all on the same day.

Liposuction is also used to reduce breast size in men with large breasts (gynecomastia) or to remove fat tumors (lipomas) but it is most commonly used for cosmetic body shaping.

Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, it is important that it be performed in a clean environment. Emergencies may arise during any surgery and access to emergency medical equipment and/or a nearby hospital emergency room is important.

Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas. Pockets of excess fat tend of accumulate in in the areas of the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. A pear-shaped figure may result in self-consciousness and clothing issues; thereby calling for liposuction. A small cannula is inserted through small incisions in the skin. At the other end of the tube is a vacuum-pressure unit that suctions off the fat.

A compression garment helps reduce swelling, and continue to sculpt the body into the desired shape.

When most of the swelling has subsided, you will see your new look emerge. As healing progresses, a more proportional look will be revealed.

What is Liposculpture?

One of many terms introduced to describe liposuction or a version of it.

Benefits of Liposuction

A newly trim body - arms, thighs, hips, abdomen, can provide a psychological lift and an extra incentive to exercise regularly and maintain fitness. Many patients even find physical activity more pleasurable after shedding extra fat, and they also find that clothes tend to fit better after liposuction.

Are you an ideal candidate?

In most cases of young healthy patients with excellent skin tone and much localized areas of fat deposits, skin re-draping is almost always excellent. The skin has an amazing property of being able to retract and shrink down to its new position without creating any overhang in your skin. The analogy is much like when you are 10-20 pounds overweight and you embark on a weight loss program. When you reach your final goal you are usually not left with loose skin that overhangs but rather a slimmer, trimmer you with perhaps more body definition.

However, if you are overweight by 60 or 70 pounds, you are older, or you already have loose skin, then, when you loose the weight, you may see some changes to the skin that indeed would leave some overhang and skin irregularities. This would also be true with liposuction.

These are, of course generalities and like everything in life there are exceptions. Much of your particular case will depend on your skin type, if you have fluffy, loose skin to begin with and perhaps you have stretch marks then this is the type of skin that has lost its elastic properties and will not retract as well as we would like. These cases are usually patients that have had children or have been through extreme changes in body weight either by weight loss or weight gain. In these cases it is best to combine liposuction with some sort of skin reducing procedure. This is the why your consultation will be crucial. You may believe you want liposuction in the abdominal area, but you may learn that an
abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, may meet your goals more effectively.

Preparation for liposuction

Before you undergo liposuction, it is important for you to discuss any medical conditions that you have and to tell your surgeon about any medications that you are taking including any herbal or other non-prescription ones. If your surgeon decides that you can have liposuction, discuss the procedure thoroughly with him or her before deciding if you want to go through with the procedure. Even though your surgeon says that you may does not mean that you must decide to have liposuction. You may still change your mind even after discussing the procedure with your surgeon.

The surgeon will consult with you either by email or on the phone prior to your departure to understand your requests fully, and will also detail the procedure, benefits and risks and answer any questions you have. He may require additional information from you before booking the procedure - including a photo, and a doctor's medical report. The assessment with the surgeon will give you a detailed understanding of the treatment - the extent of surgery, your health evaluation, your expectations and exactly what parts of the body will be treated. When you are happy with what has been discussed, and have signed a booking form for the operation, the surgery will be booked at a date agreed.

Your surgeon should be able to answer any questions that you have about liposuction including questions about what to expect during and after liposuction and the complications or problems that sometimes occur with liposuction. You may also take information from this website to your appointment to discuss with him.

You will then have another consultation with the surgeon when you arrive in Malaysia, where he will have a physical evaluation of the areas to be treated. At this appointment you and your surgeon will discuss your goals, and last queries you have and finalize the plan for surgery.

Click here for your information sheet on preparation steps. We also advise you to read our pre-liposuction preparation for maximum results.

Surgical procedure

On the day of the surgery, your surgeon will mark your body with a pen to indicate where the fat is to be removed.

Our surgeons practice the tumescent technique, which is a relatively new liposuction method that can reduce post operative bruising, swelling and pain. Because blood loss is minimized during tumescent liposuction, use of the technique reduces the chance that a blood transfusion will be needed.

In the tumescent technique, areas of excess fat are injected with a large amount of anesthetic liquid before liposuction is performed. The liquid causes the compartments of fat to become swollen and firm or "tumesced." The expanded fat compartments allow the liposuction cannula to travel smoothly beneath the skin as the fat is removed.

Other surgeons use local anesthesia and a sedative that can be taken by mouth or injected from a syringe. Still others prefer to use general anesthesia, that is to use anesthesia that will put you to sleep during the procedure. General anesthesia is usually done in a hospital.

Once the anesthesia is working, the surgeon will make an incision (0.5 cm cut) in the area (usually in skin lines or folds so it is camouflaged) where the liposuction will be performed. A canula, a hollow tube that is about the size and shape of a skinny pen, will be inserted into the incision. The surgeon moves this canula back and forth to suction out the fat. The fat, and liquid that has been injected, are collected in a flask. The surgeon will monitor the amount of fluid and fat that are removed. Because you will be losing liquid and fat from your body, it may be necessary to replace some of that fluid. This is done with an intravenous (i.v.) line for the replacement of fluid. The surgeon then moves to many different areas, keeping the number and size of incisions to a minimum.

Recovery and Post-op care

Depending upon the amount of fat removed, you may leave the hospital soon after the surgery unless you need to spend the night at the hospital. Ask your surgeon how long it will be before you should be able to return to your normal level of activity.

The cuts where the surgeon inserted the canula may be leaky or drain fluids for several days. In some cases, the surgeon may insert a drainage tube to drain fluid away from the wound.

You will wear special tight garments (compression garments) to keep your skin compressed after the liposuction procedure. Your surgeon will tell you how long to wear these. Sports and driving may need to be restricted during the recovering period and a compression garment is worn for up to 6 weeks to help with the skin remodeling. We partner with a local supplier to provide these compression garments should you need to purchase them.

Your surgeon will give you some after-surgery instructions. This will include information about wearing compression garments, taking an antibiotic if that has been prescribed, and the level of activity that is safe for you after your liposuction procedure. You should also have information about signs of problems that you should be aware of, for instance the signs of infections or other problems that you need to know about.

When the anesthesia wears off, you may have some pain. Pain varies from patient to patient, but extensive liposculpture can be painful initially. If the pain is extreme or of a long duration, you should contact us or your surgeon. You will also have some swelling after the surgery. In some cases, this swelling will remain for weeks or even months. If you have pain and swelling, this may be the sign of infection and you should contact your surgeon. But in most cases, you will start to feel better after about a week or two.

You will have minimal, almost invisible scars where the physician cuts your skin and inserts the canula to remove fat tissue.

The effects of the liposuction will not be seen for some time, after the swelling reduces.

We provide excellent post-care support, with follow-up visits and programs to assist your recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know and we will schedule an appointment with the surgeon. View our recommendations for post-operative recovery.

Other recommended procedures with liposuction

Many people who travel to Malaysia have more than one procedure because of the cost advantages and also for a more balanced look. Almost any other procedure can be done in conjunction with liposuction.

The "Ultimate Makeover" includes liposuction with a choice of other surgical and non-surgical procedures. Enquire for more information.

Your new look

You will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body quite soon after surgery. Don't be surprised if your clothes don't fit you for the first two weeks. Even though the unwanted fat has been removed, and your body looks thinner, you are swollen. After two weeks this swelling begins to come down and you will feel more yourself. However, it will take a month before you are back to normal. Improvement will become even more apparent after about four to six weeks, when most of the swelling has subsided. After about three months, any persistent mild swelling usually disappears and the final contour will be visible. Liposuction is permanent - when fat cells are removed, they cannot grow back.

If your expectations are realistic, you will probably be very pleased with the results of your surgery. You may find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body. And, by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can help to maintain your new shape.

Research shows that people who have liposuction are three times more likely to gain weight if they don't follow a healthy diet after liposuction and four times more likely to pile on the pounds without regular exercise. But those who follow a healthy diet are twice as likely to lose weight after liposuction. Consequently people are much more likely to be happy with their long term results after liposuction if they make other healthy lifestyle changes.

We recommend viewing before and after photos of patients who have undergone similar procedures.

Preconditions and Risks

We minimize risks and complications by selecting patients carefully and always having the most skilled surgeons, physicians and nurses carry out procedures.

It is therefore crucial that you seek a surgeon who is well qualified and Board Certified (as all our surgeons are), or has extensive training in liposuction. However, it's important to keep in mind that even though a well-trained surgeon and a state-of-the art facility can improve your chance of having a good result, there are no guarantees. Liposuction is usually performed in very young and healthy patients therefore it is very safe, however, like anything in life even though precautions are taken and safety measures instituted, though they are rare, complications can and do occur. Special care has to be taken whenever more than 5 liters of fat are to be removed and multiple areas or procedures are being performed. The complications are the following:

Skin sensory changes: Numbness is normal. These sensation changes are because the nerves are regenerating and it may take up to six months to go away. The number of patients that have had permanent sensory changes is extremely rare. Certain exercises that may help with the hypersensitivity changes. The theory is that you need to over-stimulate the body so that the body gets accustomed to the normal touch. Therefore you need to use a variety of materials, i.e. cotton balls, t-shirts, towels, napkins, the hand and constantly touch the body with these materials. You will notice that after some time these things will not bother you and the sensation improves. Other medicines that may help are Vitamin B6, B12, Niacin, but consult with your physician.

Hyper or Hypo-Pigmentation: Immediately after your liposuction you will have bruising and this will last for 4-5 weeks. The bruising can be improved with the use of Arnica creams and pills. You need to take this immediately after your surgery and continued for 3-4 weeks. (Consult your physician before using). If you have very pale skin this can last for up to 6 weeks. However after two months if your skin has persistent discoloration then it's possible that you have hyper-pigmentation. This is the darkening of the skin and this occurs most often in Hispanics, Afro-Americans and patients with olive colored skin. Although it may occur in very pale patients. This is essentially a result from the skin retracting and taking on a darker color. This discoloration may improve but it will take up to one year. Please consult the physician for more information.

Skin Irregularities or waviness: The skin has an amazing way of redistributing itself, and especially in the beginning because of all the swelling it will difficult to see your final result. Yo may help speed up your recovery with therapies like massages, and Endermology. Endermology which is a special machine that gives massages, we have found to be a tremendous help in reducing the swelling and speeding up recovery. If skin dimpling or bagginess develops it can be permanent, this occurs more in poor quality skin like patients with stretch marks or cellulite. In these cases it may require fat transfer to the affected area or a tummy tuck to correct the problem.

Body Asymmetry (one side different than the other): This is a very common complaint; in actuality everyone has one side of the body that is very different than the other. We just don't notice it anymore because we have been looking at our bodies for so long that we no longer see the difference. If you saw your before pictures, you may see the differences that you did not see before. In the beginning when both sides of the body heal at different rates, there is almost always more swelling on one side than the other and you just need to give it time to heal. Liposuction results take at least 6 months to be finalized.

Infections: This is very rare but if it does occur it is usually resolved with oral antibiotics.

Poor Scar Quality: This is rarely an issue since the incisions are very small and well hidden. In some patients they can develop keloid, hypertrophic scars or wide scars. Usually, a simple scar revision can improve the scar. (Unless it is a keloid.)

Reaction to the lidocaine or epinephrine: This is extremely rare, it could create heart arrhythmia. Lidocaine and epinephrine are the key ingredients in our tumescent fluid. These medicines are crucial in helping with pain control and controlling bleeding during liposuction. It is used cautiously, this medicine can be given in certain doses, if higher doses than recommended are used it can create heart arrhythmia.

Though most of these complications are rare, we believe every patient has a right to know and make an educated judgment. Please read the preconditions and risks page before embarking on any surgery.

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

An arm lift, or otherwise known as brachioplasty, can remove the excess skin and fat deposits, leaving the upper arms with a more pleasing and youthful contour. As a person ages, upper arm skin can become loose and flabby.

Plastic surgeons will consult with patients about undergoing surgery for an arm lift if they wish to tighten this skin to look and feel more youthful. The incision extends from the elbow to the underarm, and sometimes on to the side of the chest.

In some instances, your plastic surgeon may recommend that liposuction be used alone or in conjunction with an arm lift to remove excess fat in the upper arms.

Thigh Lift

The medial thigh lift will lift and tighten the sagging skin of the inner thigh. Incisions are usually placed in the groin.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

There are several different tummy tuck techniques. The most common procedure is performed under general anesthesia, called a full tummy tuck.

If your only problem area is below the belly button, you may benefit from a less complex procedure called a mini tummy tuck, which can often be performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthetic, such as that used by dentists. Or, your surgeon may recommend either a mini, full or extended tummy tuck, done in conjunction with
liposuction to remove fat deposits from the hips, for a better body contour. Sometimes liposuction alone offers the best results.

A typical tummy tuck (pictures depict a full tummy tuck procedure):

An incision just above the pubic area is used to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen.
Skin is separated from the abdominal wall, all the way up to the ribs.
The surgeon draws underlying muscle and tissue together and stitches them, tightening them, thus narrowing the waistline and strengthening the abdominal wall.
After surgery, you will enjoy a flatter, trimmer abdomen. Scars are permanent, but fades over time.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck, or partial/mini abdominoplasty, is a great option for people who have a small amount of abdominal skin to be removed and do not have a significantly protruding abdominal muscle wall. Individuals whose tummies are sagging with age or people who would just like to sculpt a slim tummy into a more desirable shape may find that a mini tummy tuck is an excellent option for them. (Please view right picture for length of scar, which is short and inconspicious.)

Mini tummy tuck surgery may be performed under general anesthesia, but is usually completed with a local anesthetic and mild sedation. The surgeon will make a smaller incision than a traditional/full tummy tuck requires, but the length of the incision will depend on the amount of skin to be removed. This is why mini tummy tuck surgery is also sometimes known as a "scarless tummy tuck." The surgeon usually does not have to reposition the navel. Next, the surgeon will stretch the skin and shape it by cutting away the excess and stitching the remaining skin into place.

This frequently is performed with
liposuction to sculpt the tummy into the desired shape.

Full Tummy Tuck

A traditional tummy tuck is best suited for healthy individuals who are fairly physically fit, but are unable to achieve their desired abdominal appearance through diet and exercise. Women whose abdominal skin and muscles have been stretched by pregnancy or further damaged by cesarean sections are good candidates for treatment. Tummy tuck procedures are also excellent for individuals who have experienced dramatic weight loss, but are unhappy with the sagging belly left behind. Both women and men can be appropriate candidates for tummy tucks. (Please view right picture for length of scar, which extends just toward the hip area.)

In the full tummy tuck procedure, the surgeon will make a long incision along the bikini-line, often from hip to hip. Next, the navel will be cut away from the surrounding tissue, because it will need to be returned to the proper position once the skin has been stretched into place. Usually the surgeon will tighten the abdominal muscle wall by stitching the muscles into position. The surgeon will then stretch the skin and shape it by cutting away the excess and stitching the remaining skin into place. A hole for the navel will then be cut, and the navel will be stitched into place. This is usually done under general anesthesia.

Although this is up to the individual surgeon, liposuction is usually performed at the same time to create a nice contour.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck is usually for obese patients that have a great deal of excess fat and have overhanging skin that extends to the back. In order to leave a nice contour, the incision needs to be extended beyond the hip area and extend more towards the back. Again, in this case the surgeon tightens the stomach muscles and create a new belly button.

This procedure is only necessary when a patient has a significant amount of excess fat and skin in the flank and upper hip regions.

Liposuction is usually performed at the same time to create a nice contour.

The length of scar is extended beyond the hip area and more towards the back.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck

A circumferential tummy tuck is more extensive than a full tummy tuck. It’s usually performed on patients who have lost a great deal of weight (usually after gastric bypass surgery/bariatric surgery) and now have loose, overhanging skin around their entire body. In a circumferential tummy tuck, the incision extends all around the waist line (that is, the circumference of the patient’s abdomen), and excess skin, fat and muscle are removed. The outer thighs and buttocks are also lifted, and a new navel is usually created.

Liposuction may also be performed to maximize body contouring.

The length of scar extends all around the waistline.

Benefits of Tummy Tuck

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can dramatically tighten the abdominal muscles, as well as the sagging, excess skin and accumulated fatty tissue. Not only will the abdomen be firmer and flatter, but the waist will be smaller as well.

The amount of improvement depends upon the extent of surgery and the patient's skin tone, body build, and healing process. Most people are happy with the results, and report a better body image after the surgery.

Best candidates for Tummy Tuck

The best candidates for a tummy tuck are people who are in otherwise good mental and physical health but have large, unmanageable fat deposits along their waist that no manner of diet or exercise will reduce. Abdominoplasty are particularly useful for women who have had a number of children and consequently stretched their abdominal muscles past point of no return. Women who plan on getting pregnant or plan on losing a great deal of weight should hold off on getting a tummy tuck. Loss of elasticity in the skin in older patients can also be improved with this procedure.

The exact benefits vary from person to person, so please discuss your expectations with your surgeon and he can suggest the right procedures.

Preparation for a Tummy Tuck

Before you undergo a tummy tuck, it is important for you to discuss any medical conditions that you have and to tell your surgeon about any medications that you are taking including any herbal or other non-prescription ones. If your surgeon decides that you can have a tummy tuck, discuss the procedure thoroughly with him or her before deciding if you want to go through with the procedure. Even though your surgeon says that you may does not mean that you must decide to have a tummy tuck.

The assessment with the surgeon will give you a detailed understanding of the treatment - the extent of surgery, your health evaluation, your expectations and exactly where your fat deposits lie in your stomach. When you are happy with what has been discussed, and have signed a booking form for the operation, the surgery will be booked at a date agreed.

Your surgeon should be able to answer any questions that you have about tummy tucks including questions about what to expect during and after a tummy tuck and the complications or problems that sometimes occur with tummy tucks.

From this examination, he can determine the best procedure to use - either the partial or full procedure - and then explain it to you in detail, including the benefits and limitations. The surgeon may also recommend a combination of the tummy tuck with liposuction, for a better body contour.

It is important to stress the importance of not smoking before a tummy tuck procedure. Smoking can cause problems with circulation and make complications more likely, including post-operative chest procedures.

Surgical procedure

Under general anesthesia, the surgeon will make a long incision across the lower abdomen. The length of the incision and amount of excess fat and skin to be removed, and stomach muscles to be tightened, depends on which type of tummy tuck procedure is performed. Please read the surgical procedures on mini tummy tuck, full tummy tuck, extended tummy tuck and circumferential tummy tuck again.

Except for the mini tummy tuck, the navel is repositioned and the skin is re-stretched over the stomach. This provides a firmer abdomen and narrows the waistline.

Recovery and Post-op care

A tummy tuck will require one to three nights in hospital, depending on the extent of the surgery. The first few days after an abdominoplasty are the most painful, as the amount of soreness and swelling are at their highest point immediately following the procedure, but this can be controlled by medication. In any case, abdominoplasty patients will experience soreness and tenderness in their lower torso, and must exhibit extreme caution to not disturb their stitches and sutures while their skin heals. The surgeon will remove the stitches after five to seven days, after which the patient will need to wear a specially designed support garment to ensure proper healing.

Returning to normal after a tummy tuck takes a bit of time. You will normally be able to walk around soon after, however at first you may not be able to stand straight. After the first week you should be able to resume normal (soft) activity. A great deal of recovery depends on your physical state before the surgery, and your physical activity after it. While light exercise may seem painful at first, it is absolutely necessary to guarantee proper healing and to reduce or prevent a number of serious post-operative risks, such as blood clots and excess swelling.

Some patients return to work as little as two weeks after the procedure, while others take longer to heal. The scar will depend on how large the operated area is - it can be as small as a caesarean incision, or a longer scar across the abdomen. At about nine months any scarring will likely subside, giving you the freedom to show off your new stomach to the whole world.

We provide excellent post-care support, with follow-up visits and programs to assist your recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know and we will schedule an appointment with the surgeon. View our recommendations for post-operative recovery.

Recommended length of stay on holiday

Other recommended procedures with Tummy tuck

Many people who travel to Malaysia have more than one procedure because of the cost advantages and also for a more balanced look. Breast surgery - enhancement or reduction - is very popular with tummy tucks to give a sculptured silhouette. Face treatments - the popular facelift, or eye lift - are popular to freshen the face.

The "Ultimate Makeover" includes Tummy tuck with a choice of other surgical and non-surgical procedures. Enquire for more information.

Your new look

Tummy tucks , whether mini or extended, produces excellent results for patients with weakened abdominal muscles or excess skin. And in most cases, the results are long lasting, if you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

If you're realistic in your expectations and prepared for the consequences of a permanent scar (though minimal) and a lengthy recovery period, a tummy tuck may be just the answer for you.

Preconditions and Risks

We minimize risks and complications by selecting patients carefully and always having the most skilled surgeons, physicians and nurses carry out procedures. However, despite the highest standards, complications can occur. They are rare, and most patients will not have complications, but if you have concerns about possible complications, please discuss these with your doctor.

Risks are less when this surgery is done by a qualified plastic surgeon trained and familiar with this procedure. Postoperative complications such as infection and blood clots (hematoma) are rare, but can occur. Infection can be treated with drainage and antibiotics, but will prolong your hospital stay. Blood clots can form in the legs during immobilization and break free to go to the lungs. You can minimize the risk of blood clots by moving around as soon after the surgery as possible.

Poor healing, which results in excessive, conspicuous scars, may necessitate a second operation. Smokers have an increased risk of tissue loss and delayed healing. Stopping nicotine use and smoking several weeks before and several weeks after surgery cleans the body and improves the chance of an uneventful recovery.

There are often areas of the abdominal skin that will be numb after surgery. Nerves to the lower parts of the abdominal wall are divided when re-draping the skin. Upper abdominal and nerves on the sides (lateral wall) can be stretched during this tissue adjustment and temporarily result in numb regions. Although there is some risk for permanent diminished sensation, almost all patients regain most or all of their feelings.

Though most of these complications are rare, we believe every patient has a right to know and make an educated judgment. Please read the preconditions and risks page before embarking on any surgery.

Designer Vagina

The Designer Vagina is a term referring to a combination of two procedures for vaginal rejuvenation (vaginoplasty) and labia reduction (labioplasty).

Please read our current packages on Designer Vagina.

What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation or vaginoplasty is a procedure traditionally used to alter the vagina walls to prevent urinary stress incontinence and the prolapse of their uterus and/or bladder (a condition which can result in these organs sliding out the woman’s vagina and dangling between her legs). Factors that are linked to pelvic organ prolapse include age, repeated childbirth, hormone deficiency, ongoing physical activity, and prior hysterectomy. Symptoms include stress incontinence (inadvertent leakage of urine with physical activity), a vaginal bulge, painful sexual intercourse, back pain, and difficult urination or bowel movements.

Cosmetic surgeons adapt this procedure for the use in vaginal rejuvenation when some clients discovered that sex was more enjoyable than it had been before the operation. Vaginal walls may sometimes be slackened due to age, repeated childbirth, ongoing physical activity, similar factors linked to pelvic organ prolapses.

Surgical Procedure

The procedure is conducted under general anesthesia. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to hold it open during the procedure. An incision is made into the vaginal skin and the defect in the underlying fascia is identified. The vaginal skin is separated from the fascia and the defect is folded over and sutured (stitched). Any excess vaginal skin is removed and the incision is closed with stitches.

Vaginal rejuvenation restores the tone of the lower vaginal musclulature by tightening the vaginal diameter and trimming away the excess skin (mucosa). Sometimes after childbirth or episiotomy repair, some of the inner vaginal mucosa is “exteriorized,’ seeming to protrude through the vaginal opening onto otherwise smooth, normal skin. During the procedure, this vaginal walls are strengthened and tissue is removed by incisions, extraction, and dissolvable sutures. This results in a clean, symmetrical appearance, with an improvement in function as well.

Recovery and Post-op care

A vaginal rejuvenation requires an overnight stay in hospital.

Following the procedure, a patient may experience minor swelling and discomfort for 2 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3 weeks, and abstinence from sexual intercourse and the use of tampons and douches for at least 6 weeks. Avoid activities for several weeks that will cause strain on the surgical site including lifting, coughing, long periods of standing, sneezing, and straining with bowel movements.

Loose and comfortable undergarments are necessary to increase comfort during healing. A pad will act as a bandage to capture drainage and blood from the incision site. Mild discomfort should be expected during recovery.

We provide excellent post-care support, with follow-up visits and programs to assist your recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know and we will schedule an appointment with the surgeon. View our recommendations for post-operative recovery.

Possible postoperative complications include scarring, changes in sensation, infection, and bleeding.

The most relevant complications, specific to vaginal surgery are:

Cystitis: A bladder infection is common after this type of surgery especially when catheterization was used. We take the necessary precautions, which may involve a prescription for antibiotics.

Problems with voiding: Very rarely, in case of a bladder lift, inadequate emptying of the bladder may occur temporarily. In that event, we re-insert the catheter into the bladder and prescribe medication to encourage the voiding reflex.

After bleeding: It is rare for bleeding to occur after vaginal surgery. Sometimes it may be necessary to insert a second vaginal tampon. A second operation, within the first 24 hours, is only rarely required to control after bleeding.

Hypertrophic scarring: Whenever surgical incisions are made, some form of scarring will ensue. In the case of vulva or vaginal surgery, scars tend to be negligible in all aspects. However, it always takes up to 18 months for the scarring process to be definitive. During the maturation phase, scarring is at its most fulminant at 3 months and normally settles down after that. Exceptionally, scar tissue can develop into troublesome tissue, causing tenderness, pain or tightness. This condition of "scar hypertrophy" may require further surgery or other forms of treatment in order to allow it the best chance to settle down.

Delayed healing: Smokers have an increased risk of tissue loss and delayed healing. Stopping nicotine use and smoking several weeks before and several weeks after surgery cleans the body and improves the chance of an uneventful recovery.

What is Labioplasty?

Many women suffer from oversized or asymmetrical labia minora (the folds of skin or "lips" surrounding the entrance to the vagina). While many women are born with this condition and are affected by it throughout their lives, it can also appear later in life with aging or due to stretching during childbirth.

Women who have oversized or asymmetrical labia minora often experience discomfort when wearing certain clothing, or during sexual intercourse and it can be a cause of embarrassment with a sexual partner. Labioplasty can reduce this discomfort and enlargement with a simple procedure to create a more aesthetically-appealing labia - in size and shape.

Surgical Procedure

The surgeon strives to preserve the natural contour, pigmentation, and sensation of the labia minor with minimal scars. Small incisions are made to remove any excess tissue or to even out the edges of the labia minora. Sutures will be placed where the incisions were made and these sutures should dissolve within a few weeks.

Recovery and Post-op care

Labioplasty requires an overnight stay in hospital.

After the procedure, normal activity may be resumed after 2 weeks, and another 2 weeks longer if you have vaginal rejuvenation together, depending on the healing process. Patients have minimal or no bruising, can shower the next day, have no stitches to remove and can have intercourse after 6 weeks, even coupled with a vaginal rejuvenation procedure.

However, we strongly advise healing up to 6 weeks for any vaginal or rectal intercourse. In most cases, the labioplasty is virtually undetectable after complete healing with patients in follow-up being extremely pleased with the results.

We provide excellent post-care support, with follow-up visits and programs to assist your recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know and we will schedule an appointment with the surgeon. View our recommendations for post-operative recovery.
